How to Fix a Toilet

Knowing why your toilet isn’t working is essential to figuring out the best action to get a working lavatory. There is a laundry list of reasons your toilet may not work. In this article, we will go over common issues and ways to fix them.

Clogging

A common reason your lavatory won’t flush is that it’s clogged. Never flush anything other than toilet paper and waste down your toilet. Wet wipes and other hygiene items can build up and block your sewer pipes. Clogs may not be visible in your home, but there could still be a block further down in the sewer.

If your lavatory is still not flushing correctly, you probably have a partial clog. A partial clog somewhere could mean that your toilet can still flush but is not very strong. The best way to find out if you have a partial clog is to pour a bucket with a gallon of cold water into the bowl.

One way to fix a clog is using a plunger to loosen the material causing the clog. Another way to loosen materials is to turn the water off, flush, and add hot water to the bowl. Let the water sit for about 5-10 minutes, then flush it. You should consider using a drain snake to unclog the toilet if that doesn’t work.

The flap Won’t Close.

A flapper is a rubber valve at the bottom of your toilet’s water tank. The flapper opens and closes whenever you flush. It allows water to run from the tank into the bowl. When you press your toilet’s handle, it lifts the flapper. Your toilet’s flapper is in constant contact with moving water; over time, the water can bend the flapper.

Flappers are cheap and available at about every local hardware store. To fix the flapper, you should see if it seals tightly when closed and if you can see wear or damage. After you see the damage, you should turn off the water, drain your toilet tank and replace the flapper. Make sure you reattach the chain. If you need help, we’re standing by.
